Colin Firth: A Good Comedy Is About Reality!

Almost every comedy you see is about people making all wrong choices and making all the errors of judgement possible. Good comedy is when it works on this scale. Because it is psychologically very real.

Colin Firth

The fact that we laugh about errors of judgement can be considered a paradox. We try to avoid mistakes that can harm us, but when we see them in other people we find them hilarious. It is like: it better happens to you so I can laugh! Bad things happen, this is the reality so you’ll probably laugh more if the trouble is something you are familiar with, than if the story is one made up by a director. But then again, there are situations when not forced, the humor, can really touch us. Take Seinfeld the example. The film about nothing, but yet about everything! There, the simplest situation is turned in such way that it becomes funny. George getting married and his future wife dying of licking old stamps. Who would have thought to make a funny scene out of this? But actually it turned to be really funny. And humor is about that sometimes: turning a sad story into a hilarious one.
